COAL

Coal is the "Black Gold" of the area and is found in numerous seams. Many of these coal seams are close to the surface and are mined by removing the "overburden" with draglines and other large equipment. Big shovels are used to extract the coal. Huge dump trucks capable of 200tonne loads cart the coal from the "face" in the "pit" to the coal preparation plant where it is crushed and washed prior to transport to the Port of Newcastle by rail. The deeper seams are mined by underground techniques using "long wall miners"
